My personal experience is even after spending 9 years in IT, my career path was limited in terms of role and monetary gains, once I started path of ITIL, I got huge exposure/big role & commendable growth. So last five years after ITIL expert certification was a game changer for me. ITIL certification is worth your time & efforts.
Summarizing that fact, ITIL certification is worth your time & efforts, only you need to decide that at which level in your professional career, what level you need to achieve in ITIL.
